Powering a Mobile MRI/CT: How to Know if Your Site is Viable

Integrating mobile MRI/CT imaging equipment into a healthcare facility is a huge step towards elevating patient care. While prepping for delivery day, providers must evaluate their site’s specifications to determine if they can handle the power requirements of a mobile imaging unit.

As one of the nation’s most trusted mobile imaging brokers, Cube Mobile Imaging is here to help healthcare facilities and providers who are ready to take the next step but are unsure of the logistics. Here are some key factors to consider when evaluating your site’s viability for mobile imaging.

Powering a Mobile MRI/CT

Mobile MRI/CT equipment needs a steady and uninterrupted power source to avoid

compromising performance. Facilities will need an output of 480 volts 3 phase between 150 and 200 amps. Maintaining this power level can be done with the use of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). A UPS system can cover dips in the electrical supply during scans and ensure imaging sequences are not interrupted.

Performing an Audit

Prior to delivery, facilities should perform power audits, checking for average line voltage, surge, sags, reclosures, impulses, and frequency during normal days of use. Any history of previous power difficulties should be reviewed in order to prevent a repeat with the mobile imaging unit. During the summer months, the equipment can be vulnerable to low voltage conditions or “brownouts.” Providers and facilities must ensure that these brownouts will not exceed the allowable range.

Connecting a Mobile MRI/CT

Typically, the trailers in Cube’s fleet of mobile MRI/CT vehicles utilize 200 amp Russellstoll plugs and the facility must have a matching receptacle. Newer healthcare facilities may not be equipped with these outlets and will need to consult a contractor to install them. The trailers will usually have a cord that is approximately 30 feet long, requiring the trailer to be within this distance from the facility.
